Public Transport
Travelling by bus in Östersund should feel safe, easy, and accessible. Much of the local public transport is adapted for accessibility. Most bus stops and buses are designed to accommodate passengers with various disabilities. Many vehicles are equipped with wheelchair ramps, and drivers are responsible for assisting passengers when boarding and alighting. Buses also feature visual signage and audio announcements.

Parking
Östersund offers ample parking for people with reduced mobility. These spaces are designed to make it easier to get around and park closer to your destination. You’ll need a valid disability parking permit to use them.

Jamtli

At Jamtli, history comes to life through immersive role-playing in Historieland and year-round exhibitions at the museum and the Nationalmuseum Jamtli

Jamtli features historical settings from the 19th to the 1970s and is home to the thousand-year-old Överhogdal tapestries – the oldest complete pictorial weavings in Europe. There are also exhibitions on Viking life and Sámi culture.
Jamtli strives to be accessible to all and continually works to improve access to its exhibitions, historic environments, café, restaurant and hostel.

Storsjöbadet

Storsjöbadet is good for the whole family, with a diving board, grotto, lazy river and a large relaxation area.

Pool lifts are available for getting in and out of the water. There’s also a lift to reach the relaxation area on the second floor.

Multi Challenge

Multi Challenge Adventure house is one of Sweden’s largest indoor activity centres.

Multi Challenge is offering everything from Boda Borg, indoor go-karting and laser tag, to mini golf, a play area and billiards.

Multi Challenge works continuously to make its activities fun and accessible to more visitors.

Tysjöarna

A haven for birdwatchers with cranes, swans and other species arriving as early as April.

In May and June, the Tysjöarna Nature Reserve comes alive with long-legged waders such as ringed plovers, temminck’s stints and little stints.

Accessibility:
The reserve features a long wooden boardwalk, suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and walkers. There are also rest areas and accessible outdoor toilets along the way.
To make access easier, parts of the trail include wooden planks fixed to the ground.
From the car park, a nearly 1,300-metre-long boardwalk leads out into the reserve. It is 130 centimetres wide, has edge protection on both sides, and offers passing areas with benches at regular intervals. Where the boardwalk crosses streams, handrails are provided on both sides.

Bynäset

A beautiful nature area with stunning views of Lake Storsjön and the mountains. A 7 km trail winds through varied forest and along the lakeshore.

The southern section is accessibility-adapted with a 2 km gravel path leading to a picnic spot by the water.
Further along, the path becomes a forest trail with occasional roots and wet ground.

Ändsjön Nature reserve

Ändsjön Nature Reserve on Frösön is one of the finest birdwatching spots near Östersund.

A wide variety of ducks can be seen here in large numbers, including great crested grebe, black-necked grebe, pochard, coot and teal.
Cranes often nest in the area, and marsh harriers are frequently seen gliding over the reeds in search of prey.
The surrounding forest is also home to many small bird species. In late spring and early summer, the bird song is particularly rich—especially in the mornings and evenings.
The robin’s melody is a highlight, while blue tits forage in the reed beds and great spotted woodpeckers can be heard drumming on tree trunks.

Accessibility:
A 3 km trail circles the lake, with two birdwatching towers along the route. The southern tower, newly built in 2023, is accessible for pushchairs, wheelchairs and walkers.

Lillsjön Nature reserve

A vibrant area with rich birdlife and a beach with a pier and bathing ramp, making water access easier.

Lillsjön Nature Reserve offers a peaceful mix of forest, open meadows, wetlands, and small streams.

There’s a barbecue area, a wind shelter, and a fishing jetty—perfect for a picnic or a quiet moment by the water. Some paths are accessible and suitable for prams and wheelchairs.

There are many fun playgrounds in Östersund. Several with inclusive play equipment that can be used by everyone.

Badhusparken Playground
Features a high-backed swing for extra support and a safe spinning bowl. The surface makes access easy for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Lunch with a view

Take the lift to the top floor of Arctura, 55 metres above ground, and enjoy stunning views over the city and surrounding mountains.

The lunch restaurant is located on the top floor of the Arctura accumulator tank, which holds an impressive 26 million litres of hot water and plays a key role in providing district heating for the region.
