Östersund was founded in 1786 by King Gustav III. In 1788, land surveyor Johan Törnsten drew the first city plan — a grid with 24 blocks and 136 plots.
To attract residents, tax exemptions were offered for those who wished to engage in trade and crafts, but despite this, the town grew slowly.
When the railway was inaugurated in 1879, the population began to grow rapidly, trade picked up, and the appearance of the town changed.
Take a walk through the history of Östersund. The walk takes approximately 30 minutes and takes you to 10 locations, including the Town Hall, the Old Theatre and the City Museum.
