The Islands in the lake Storsjön

The many beautiful islands in Lake Storsjön form Jämtland’s own archipelago. The island life offers everything from barbecue evenings by the water, bike rides, still kayak tours to popping champagne corks in the castle environment.

Andersön

To Andersön are families, exercisers and others who want to recharge the batteries and calm down the breath for a while. The island is a nature reserve and the environment here is, to say the least, fascinating.

Long beautiful pebble beaches, knotty pines, ancient monuments and fossils. In the forest there is a myriad of forest trails for those who want to jog, cycle, stroll or pick mushrooms and berries. Along the beaches there are plenty of nice barbecue places right next to the water. Last summer’s heat wave transformed Andersön into clean play and everyone who limped past the first rocky bottom section was rewarded with some sandy bottom out. This is the island for anyone with a sense of discovery.

Norderön

A short bridge from Andersön is Isön and from there the car ferry goes to Norderön. The ferry runs every half hour and is free. Around 140 people live on Norderön and many of them work wholeheartedly to make the island accessible and enjoyable for visitors.

Norderöns golf course not only offers a beautiful 18-hole course. Here you will find frisbee golf, football golf, a new nature gym and bicycles for rent. There are also nice places for motorhomes or caravans.

A few kilometers further into the island is Tivarsgården, with farm dairy, shop and restaurant. Here the farm’s 14 own cheeses are sold, with names such as Storsjöns Blå and Port Norderön. The restaurant’s menu is tastefully composed with primarily local produce and hot summer days you can enjoy the food at Tivar’s jetty. Next to the jetty there is a beach where you can swim and rent canoes – and to the delight of the children, the farm’s rabbits are moving around. Don’t miss Wednesday nights with live music during July and early August.

A few hundred meters from Tivars there is an exciting Vikingaby, with long houses and a real Viking ship. The village is run by Österhus Friends and, in particular, accepts pre-booked groups, but sometimes activities are also organized for the public.

Verkön

From Tivars on Norderön it is convenient to take the Sjöexpressen to Verkön. The slightly more adventurous rent kayak and get there on their own. Verkö Castle was renovated a few years ago and has since become the hottest archipelago. On the 400 square meter castle terrace, the archipelago feeling is enhanced by large white sails that are stretched up. Delicious food, good drinks and live music are the recipe for a truly magical evening at the castle. If you do not want to go home, you can book one of the castle’s beautiful rooms or a bed space in the courtyard.

Before the food, it is not stupid to take a walk up to the lookout tower on the island, which offers a fantastic view of the Storsjö countryside. Those who do not feel like walking can instead take a bath at Verköns new bathing facility, with wood-burning hot tub, sauna, shower and wooden walkways into the lake.

Larger groups who want to get to Verkön can subscribe to the steamboat s / s Östersund or book a speedy trip with a rib boat. It is also possible to charter the Sjöexpressen for a round trip between Östersund harbor and Verkö harbor. Private individuals or smaller groups can luxury it with a helicopter ride from town and enjoy the Storsjön archipelago from above.
