Kite & Surf in Östersund

The city at the foot of the mountain. And the water. Sweden's 5 largest lakes offer really good conditions for water sports.

Maybe you don’t think primarily of Östersund when it comes to surfing and water sports. But the town attracts more and more nature-loving adventurers, and many Östersund residents have long been familiar with the fine conditions for surfing of various kinds. In the winter, Storsjön is a giant arena for skating tours, cross-country skiing and walking, but when the ice melts at the beginning of May, a new arena opens up for surfing water sports.

Östersund is known for being windy. And the fact is that there are quite a few really good places to surf when the wind is blowing, and it often does so in a north-westerly direction. Waves build over the Lake Storsjön and the wind picks up. It can often be good to wear both a hood and gloves – Storsjön is being replenished rapidly with meltwater from the mountains. A good, warm suit is often in order.

Popular spots

Below we list some of the most visited and popular spots. There are plenty of other places to surf around Storsjön, if you want to know more, take the opportunity to join one of the Facebook groups @kiterepubliken or @surfosd.se

Kite i Östersund

Mårtensviken

Here there are large areas for launching and landing the kite. Fun and good place to learn to drive with a foil wing under the board.

Working wind directions. O/S/W
Beach: Sand
Surfing: No
Kite: Yes, large open area.

Park directly down by the beach.

Vindsurfning Östersund

Frösö boat harbour-Göviken

When it's really windy, it can be really fun sailing with "bouncy" ramps to jump on. Above all in N/NW winds.

Working wind directions.
N/N
Beach: Stone
Surfing: No
Kite: Yes, large grass area on the Frösö side.

Park north of Frösö boat harbor here there is a large lawn to rig on.

If you choose to sail from the Östersund side (the other side of the strait) called “Göviken”, you can park north of the helipad just before Lugnvik. Keep in mind that the wind likes to lift a little when they hit land.

Surfing Östersund

Västbyviken

Many people gather here when it "goes off". For kiters, windsurfers and surfers. When it's blowing properly from W/W-NW/NW, this is where really nice

Working wind directions. WNW/NW
Beach: Sharp stones
Wave surfing: Yes
Kite: Yes – inside the bay

Follow signs for Bynäset just after Frösö Park Hotel and just before the large parking lot, turn right.

There are two starting points here. At the far end of the bay at the bathing area and at the windbreak a little further out into the bay on the right side. A good place for those who want to start learning, because you always drift into the bay. Here it is also always a bit more windy than in other places in the lake.

The area has previously been a military training area that was closed to the public. There are now walking-biking/pathways around the peninsula, but parts are still a closed area.

Kungsgårdsviken

Kungsgårdsviken is located next to Frösö Östersund Golf Course in the bay opposite Bynäset.

Turn towards the golf course on Frösön and follow the signs to Kungsgården – a few 100 m further on is the harbour.

Working wind directions. SO
Beach: Stone
Surfing: No
Kite: Yes, if you can trick your screen between houses.

Easy to rig and get in and out of the water. But often very gusty wind.

Rödösundet

Between Frösön and Rödön lies a bay with a wonderful view of the mountain world. Here, the bay means that the wind can be stronger.

Here it is not unusual for the wind to be a little stronger than in other places with waves from several directions at the same time, but towards the Frösö side there can be really nice waves.

Working wind directions. W/WNW Beach: Stone Surfing: No Kite: Yes

Cross the bridge Rödöbron (if coming from the city) Take the first exit on the left and follow it through the residential area to the beach. (it is not possible to sail in the indicated wind directions from the parking lot on the right side)

Surfing Östersund

Mjälaviken

In our opinion, one of the best lake sailing spots. Here proper waves can be delivered which under the right conditions break over a shallow rock reef

Requires strong southerly wind, which builds fine waves right from Svenstavik at the southernmost parts of Storsjön. A fun but demanding place and not for beginners.

From Rödöbron drive on approx. 10 km towards Mjäla. The road down is in poor condition, but you can park along the main road and walk down.

Nothing for kiters as the beach is full of trees. Working wind directions. S Beach: Stone Wave surfing: Yes Kite: No

Wakeboard

The place that wants to spread good vibes. Here there is a cable to go wakeboarding on. Perfect to try as a beginner.

The towns wakeboard place, you will find right across the bay from Badhusparken at the end of the walking bridge to Frösön.

Here you can  jump from the bathing jetty, jump on the trampoline, play beach volleyball, go on a slackline or just have a coffee and a good time.
