Alfresco favourites in and around the city

Nothing feels more summery than sitting out on a café terrace in the sun, with a tasty bite to eat and a glass of something refreshing. And in these Corona virus times, being outside can feel particularly good. Here are a couple of places you really shouldn’t miss this summer.

Vezzo – Get that New York feeling in the courtyard

If you fancy some good Italian food, Vezzo is your place. It has a laid-back atmosphere where pasta, salads, antipasto and award-winning pizzas are served. Everything is made from scratch with organic and locally produced ingredients. On the floor above, sister-restaurant Grinded tempts eaters with a range of different burgers. Whatever your choice, you order your food directly from the cooks at the different food counters. Speedy, simple and super-tasty.

And as the evening draws in, Magazinet Bar opens up with good music, DJs and delicious cocktails.

Norra Station – a creative combination of culture, art and food

The sausage of all sausages, home-baked bread and home-roasted coffee. Norra Station is a gastronomic meeting place where you can drop by for a snack or lunch, or even book a guided food walk, or a coffee or chocolate tasting. Ingredients are carefully selected from local food artisans and coffee is roasted on site at Östersund’s Coffee Roastery, spreading a wonderful aroma right across the neighbourhood. Make sure you try out the renowned local sausages.

Set in a cosy courtyard, the place also has a roof terrace and is home to Galleri Lux.

Marité – the best view in town

A few metres up from the waters of Lake Storsjön and Östersund’s harbour you’ll find Marité, one of the city’s real summer gems. Good food and summery drinks are served up on the popular terrace, which has a fantastic view of Lake Storsjön and Oviksfjällen mountains.

Later in the evening, the two levels of the restaurant are transformed into summertime’s most popular nightclub.

Jazzköket Lagerbaren – a marvellous mix of music and food

Jazzköket has won more awards than any other of Östersund’s restaurants, and is focused on seasonal, local, organic, sustainable food. The bar follows the same philosophy with local brewers, Swedish-made spirits and international natural wines. It is a marvellous mix of live concerts and food.

On warm summer evenings, the cosy courtyard is open where delicious sour-dough pizzas are baked in the wood-fired oven.

Hamngatan Magasinet – décor, snacks and pintxos

At Hamngatan 12, the city’s cosiest interior design store has opened a café. All food is prepared from scratch, and is largely based on vegetables and fruit salvaged in the fight against food wastage. Take a seat in the courtyard for a tasty lunch, a snack, or a glass of wine in the sun.

On Fridays they serve Pintxos, plates of cold-cuts and other goodies. Hamngatan is also an official reseller of the award-winning ice-cream from Glassbaren in Bräcke.

Teaterträdgården (Theatre garden) – food and music in a lush green oasis

Gamla Teatern was built in 1884 by the Order of Good Templars, and at the time was the largest wooden building in Sweden. Its leafy Teaterträdgården has plenty of space for the whole family. Themed food is on the menu here, including the Grill buffet, Pizza evenings, Prawn parties and Quiz nights.

DJs take to the stage on Fridays and Saturdays, and if the evenings get a little cooler, then there’s plenty of space to huddle up by the outdoor heaters.

This food hall has a fabulous food counter full of fresh ingredients that make your mouth water. Take your pick from local meat prepared on site, fresh fish and seafood from Tröndelag in Norway, local cheese, cold-cut meats and much more.

Tivars Gårdsmejeri – homemade cheese and hanging out on the pier

Tivars is a dairy farm located on Norderön island, at the edge of Lake Storsjön with a view of the lake and Oviksfjällen mountains. Cheese is made from the farm’s own cows and several of the cheeses have won medals in the Swedish Food Artisan Championships. All cheeses are named after elements of Norderön island or the farm itself, which is now being run by the 14th generation of the family. Tivars is a perfect day trip if you fancy some of their good cheese. Enjoy a lovely dinner on the pier or buy something from the restaurant to take with you when you go ashore on one of the nearby islands.

You can also rent a canoe or kayak from the farm. And if the Corona virus allows, the popular live music evenings will return.

Live concerts and DJ’s play occasionally.

Sir Winston Sail – the best location on the town square

At the end of the 1800s, the English and Scottish discovered the abundance of game and fish of the Jämtland wilderness. One of these visitors to the county was Sir Winston Churchill, who in addition to becoming a world leader also became known for his love of good food and drink. Keep your eye on everything happening on Stortorget town square while you enjoy classics such as Sir Winston Sail’s Landö Arctic char, local cold cuts, delicious prawn sandwiches, salads and more.

And if the mood takes you, then there’s always Sir Winston’s favourite drink, champagne.
