Frösö Island

Frösön is Storsjön’s largest island. Frösön welcomes you to experience its nature, adventure, cultural history and a wonderful view – over Storsjön, away towards Oviksfjällen and Åreskutan.

On Frösön you can walk around in the pilgrims’ tracks, play golf on one of Sweden’s most beautiful golf courses, visit the composer Wilhelm Peterson-Berger’s former home, which is now a museum and a summer café. You can also treat yourself good with exercise and a spa experience at Frösö Park hotel, visit Frösö Church which has a fantastic view of the Storsjö area and the mountain world. If you just want to experience the magnificent view of Storsjön, Östersund and large parts of the Jämtland mountain world, there are 2 lookout towers with summer cafés to visit.

Frösö Kyrka

The best view

Frösö church was probably begun to be built in the late 12th century and is built on top of a pagan sacrificial site. The church is one of Sweden’s most popular wedding churches.

At Frösö cemetery, ancestors from different eras date back to pre-Christian times. Frösön´s “celebrity” No. 1 – composer Wilhelm Peterson-Berger – has his grave near the southern church wall.

To Frösö Church you can take the county traffic bus no: 3 from Östersunds Busstation. Timetables are available at www.ltr.se

By car from the city center of Östersund, take the Frösö Bridge and continue on the road Vallaleden, continue on the road Rödövägen and then turn left to Stockevägen towards the sign for Frösö Kyrka.

To Sommarhagen you can take the county traffic bus no: 4 from Östersund Bus Station and travel all the way to the end at Härke / Mickelsgård station, it takes about: 10 minutes. Timetable is on: www.ltr.se

By car you take the same road as to Frösö Church, (see above). At the church, turn left down towards Valla Centrum, after about 1 km there is a sign for Sommarhagen and its parking.

Museum and Café

The composer Wilhelm Peterson-Berger was captivated by the beauty of Frösön. So much so that he let him build his summer house here, with miles of views of forests, lakes and mountains.

The house was built in 1914 by the composer, critic and music writer. Today, he is remembered for Frösöblomster, piano pieces such as Sommarsången, Vid Frösö Kyrka and Intåg i Sommarhagen.

Today, Sommarhagen is a museum with a café and a popular tourist attraction.

Länstrafik bus lines 3 and 4, stop Frösön Tunnangränd – then walking distance to start 1.8 km. Alternatively Länstrafik bus line 530, stop Frösön Cronstads väg – then walking distance 2.3 km.

By car you go towards Frösö Park Hotel and then continue a few kilometers until there is a sign with “Bynäset” and turn left and drive about: 1.5 km down to the parking lots.

Baths, walk and bicycle

Out on Bynäset there are nice paths for walking, running or cycling. The trail, which is just under 7 km, paths in a varied forest environment along the beaches of Lake Storsjön.

In popular terms, this area is called “Östersunds Riviera”. The north side offers a long black sandy beach with sandy bottom and open grassy areas for play and picnics. There is also a shallow bathing bay with pebble beach, barbecue places and a kiosk at summertime.

Östersund/Frösö Golf Course

18-hole trail and Pay & Play

Östersund / Frösö Golf course is considered one of Sweden’s golf courses with the finest views. A magnificent view of the mountains, Lake Storsjön and its archipelago.

There is an 18-hole trail, adventure course for the little ones and a 9-hole Pay & Play course.

Take the opportunity to dine or have a drink at the Golf Restaurant which has this view as its terrace.

Frösötornet

Views and Café

Frösötornet on Östberget offers a magnificent view of Lake Storsjön, Östersund and large parts of the mountain chains. In clear weather you can see Oviksfjällen, Åreskutan and all the way across the border to the Norwegian mountains.

The tower is located at Frösön’s highest point, 468 meters above sea level.

The visit to the tower is successful because there is a White Guide café in the building that focuses on raw food goodies.

By car from the city center, drive over the Frösö bridge, turn right onto Bergsgatan and follow it towards the sign Tanne. Then turn left onto the road Byvägen, then turn left onto the road Toppvägen, which leads up to the lookout tower.

Bicycle

Popular for trail cycling

A wonderful round for mountain biking is around Frösön, about 30 km with a mixture of technical trails and gravel roads.

Frösön is also a good starting point for cycling on to Rödön and to Dvärsätt and then cycling back to Östersund along Storsjön’s beach.

You will find fast-paced downhill cycling on Östberget.

Restaurants and Cafées

There are plenty of  Restaurants and coffee places on Frösön.

Try “Frösökyssar” from Tages Konditori och Kök, or homemade pasterys from Stocketitt, have a brunch at Frösö Park Hotel, or an espresso at Surfbukten

Runestone

Frösö Runestone

World's northernmost

Close to the bridge of Frösön  is the world´s  northernmost runestone placed.

The stone was carved during the 1050s and tells the story of Östman, Gudfast son, who had a bridge built over the water from Frösön to Östersund and to have Christianized Jämtland.
